TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE
- Switch to LED Christmas lights. These long last bulbs last between 50,000 and 100,000 hours (versus incandescent bulbs which last approximately 1,000 hours and fluorescents that last 10,000 hours). LED lights are also resistant to heat, cold and shock!
- Reuse boxes, bags and shipping materials for wrapping gifts.
- Better yet, use practical items for wrapping gifts -- why not wrap up your packages in a dishtowel, festive holiday bath towel, or even a warm and cozy winter scarf!
- Use timers on all your interior and exterior holiday lights.
- Set the mood with soft, ambient lighting in your home. Dimmer switches are an inexpensive way to save energy!
- If you are entertaining a house full of people, turn down the temperature in the house before they arrives. The guests will generate body heat and warm the room in no time!
- Mulch your Christmas tree after the holidays!
- Clean out your cupboards -- donate unwanted gifts or outgrown items to your local charity.
- Send e-cards to friends and relatives.
- Go back to the basics with homemade holiday decorations. Make it a family event -- string popcorn, cranberries or gumdrops for Christmas garland, and bake gingerbread characters as gifts, to hang on the tree, or to just enjoy!
