TREE CANADA - LEARNING RESOURCES
Tree Canada supplies us with a number of interactive learning modules and resources that allow teachers and students to explore the trees that grow in Canada, what they look like, where they grow and why they are important to us.
We are pleased to present these learning resources to help Canadians appreciate the vision of Tree Canada: to understand the economic and environmental value of trees, and as a result, get personally involved in the planting and care of trees in communities across the country!
GROW CLEAN AIR CALCULATOR Calculate how much carbon dioxide is produced by common emission sources and how many trees you need to plant (or help us plant) to offset those emissions.
TREE GENUS VS TREE SPECIES In the Latin (scientific) name, there are two words used: the genus, followed by the species. For example, in the tree sugar maple, Acer saccharum. The Acer part describes it as a maple with the saccharum describing it as a sugar maple.
ENGLISH VS LATIN Both English (common) and Latin (scientific) names are given. The English name for a tree can vary from region to region in Canada (for example "green ash" is also commonly called "red ash"). For this reason, the Latin name is commonly used to designate trees.
LIST OF TREE GENUS -- for a listing of tree genus in both Latin and English.
LIST OF TREE SPECIES -- for a listing of tree names in both Latin and English.
LIST OF DECIDUOUS TREES - for a listing of tree names in both Latin and English.
LIST OF CONIFER TREES -- for a listing of tree names in both Latin and English.
CANADA'S ARBOREAL EMBLEMS A Tree Canada booklet that provides readers with a description of each provincial and territorial tree. It reflects the pride and attachment Canadians have toward Canada's forests.
GREENING CANADA'S SCHOOL GROUNDS Greening Canada's School Grounds is a common sense grassroots movement whose time has come. There is a need to protect the health of school children by sheltering them from harmful UVB rays. Trees strategically placed on school grounds offer students some reprieve from the sun's rays.
The neighbourhood school ground is the heart of a child's community. Children deserve an interesting, aesthetically pleasing environment.
