The Rainforest Alliance is a global organization that, according to it’s mission, works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour. The Rainforest Alliance works with businesses and consumers worldwide to bring responsibly produced goods and services to a global marketplace, where the demand for sustainability is steadily growing. Farms, forestry enterprises and businesses that meet the Rainforest Alliance’s comprehensive criteria receive the Rainforest Alliance certification seal.
Many recognize the term “fairtrade” when it comes to product certification. Fairtrade is an ethical trading system that guarantees a minimum price for sustainable production and institutes a fairtrade premium that is directed for social and economic development in the producing communities.
Rather than recognize how products are traded, Rainforest Alliance certification means that certain standards are adhered to in regards to how a farm is managed. These standards ensure workers’ rights (and the right to organize), the right to a safe, clean work environment, the right to be paid at least the national minimum wage, dignified housing (including potable water), access to medical care for workers and their families, and access to free education.
